KUALA LUMPUR: Every day an average of 19 people become victims of road crashes nationwide and last year, alone, nearly 7,000 fatal accidents were reported.
Also, the number of accidents has been steadily rising worldwide and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic accidents now kill more people than malaria.
Seeing there is an urgency to address the problem, cooperation is needed from companies, government agencies, public associations, as well as from individuals.
Innovate Solutions Systems Sdn Bhd adviser Datuk Tony Lee said companies should join hands to spread awareness of road safety.
Lee said companies should adopt the road safety campaign as their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
"It is hoped that companies will help stop these tragic deaths by having road safety campaign with us as part of their CSR," he said, adding that the company had been actively involved in Malaysian road safety campaign for about 10 years.
He said that the company has collaborated with BHPetrol and UMW Toyota Motors to develop and implement comprehensive road safety projects.
Besides that, it also has been responsible for transforming the vision of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia to focus on effective road safety initiatives, including the implementation of road safety education in the country.
Meanwhile, in May the United Nations launched a "Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020" worldwide.
The Decade of Action consists of building road safety management capacity, upgrading the safety of road infrastructure, enhancing the behaviour of road users and improving emergency services.
"We are proud to be the first organisation to support the Decade of Action in reducing the number of road accidents in Malaysia," Lee said.
