Free helmets, vests for better road safety

GEORGE TOWN: Hundreds of motorcyclists were presented with helmets and safety vests at a road safety awareness campaign organised by the Road Safety Department recently.

They were pleasantly surprised to receive the goodies at a road block mounted by the road authority's officers at Lebuh Farquhar.

Motorcyclists made a beeline to have their helmets inspected at the roadside.

Those found wearing helmets not adhering to safety standards were issued new ones as replacements.

Aziyaty Abd Aziz, 25, was ecstatic to own a new helmet, as she felt safer while riding her motorcycle.

"My helmet was old, and the replacement will give me a better sense of security. This campaign is definitely a step in the right direction to reduce road fatalities," Aziyaty said.

Another motorcyclist, Amirudin Mansor, 28, was happy to see his four-year-old son, Luqman Hakimi Amirudin, receive a new helmet.

"I have been riding with my son since he was two," said Amirudin, a dispatch rider.

"The good quality helmet will surely provide a safety boost for him."

On hand to distribute the helmets and other goodies to motorcyclists were department director-general Leslie Leon and several management staff.

Leon said 150,000 free helmets have been given out to road users in Malaysia since 2008.

He said road safety campaigns are held regularly at universities and schools to curb rising road accidents.

Car owners received pamphlets on tips to enhance road safety during the campaign.

A Road Safety Department spokesman said the old helmets collected would be destroyed.
