Selangor reduces solid waste through recycling

SOLID waste collection in the state has been reduced with the introduction of recycling efforts by the local authorities.

State local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) had done remarkably well as they had achieved a 25% reduction in solid waste.

He said the council achieved the feat gradually since 2008 when it was only able to reduce the waste by 1.44% and 10.6% the following year.

“We are only talking about one particular council and the other local authorities are also doing their best to reduce solid waste,’’ he told Gan Pei Nei (PR-Rawang).

Liu said the Kajang Munciipal Council collected the most recyclable items amounting to 6.29 million kg followed by the Kuala Langat District Council with 257,683kg and Selayang Municipal Council with 160,180kg.

He said the Kuala Selangor District Council collected 7,835kg while no figures were available for the Sepang District Council and Petaling Jaya City Council.

Liu said the success of the recycling efforts depended on the support it received from everyone, including the public.

He said the state had also organised various programmes to create awareness among the public on the need for recycling.

“It includes the Clean Zone programme carried out by all the local authorities.

“The programme was successful in creating awareness among the public,’’ he said.

Liu said the state had not received any form of incentives from the Federal Government to carrying out recycling activities.

However, he said, the MPSJ was involved in a recycling project with the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“The Serdang Business Town project is a joint venture between the council and the ministry.

“The project is being carried out under a RM1.5mil funding from the Japanese government,’’ he said.
