GEORGE TOWN, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Penang Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow acknowledged today that the state government provides limited allocation to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) for cleaning and refuse collection.
He told the state legislative assembly meeting that state government had to implement the concept of integrated cleaning contractors due to the shortage of funds to replace refuse bins.
"The failure to provide sufficient funds to replace the refuse bins has resulted in the MPSP having to pay about RM500,000 monthly to cleaning contractors," he said.
Chow gave the reply to Datuk Jahara Hamid (BN-Telok Ayer Tawar) who had interjected during the winding-up of debate on the Supply and Development Estimates Bill 2012 to ask the state government why it had allocated a limited allocation to the MPSP for the replacement of old refuse bins.
He had alleged that non-replacement and poor maintenance of old refuse bins had made the Seberang Perai area dirty.
"Attention must be given to the matter because many refuse bins are in a state of disrepair with the rubbish falling out, causing much eyesore and emitting a foul smell," he said.
