Rural communities to help the environment

JULAU, Sarawak: Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang today advised the rural communities in Sarawak to play their role in safeguarding the environment.

Salang, who is deputy minister of information, communications and culture, said they should stop treating rivers as rubbish dumps, refrain from felling trees along river banks and never use chemicals to fish.

He said this at the closing of a "Friends of the Environment" programme for community leaders and students at SMK Julau here. The text of his speech was read out by his senior private secretary, Danny Bungan.

Salang also said that the people should adopt environment-friendly technology like energy-saving bulbs in their homes, schools and offices, and prefer to use reusable bags when shopping.
