Diploma in Environmental Health, Unisel

INTRODUCTION

Environmental Health addresses all the physical, chemical and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supporting environments. This definition excludes behavior not related to environment, as well as behavior related to the social and cultural environment, and genetics.


PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION 

Diploma in Environmental Health is a three years program including six months practical attachment. The first five semesters, students will be exposed to environmental health knowledge and any related issues arising such as the public health nuisance, environmental protection, food safety and sanitation, legal procedures and occupational safety and health. The last semester, students are placed to undergo practical attachment. In addition to the overriding themes, operational and communication skills are essential for environmental health practitioner.

1. Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or its equivalent

Assalamualaikum & selamat sejahtera.

Hari ni macam terdetik pulak nak cakap pasal sindrom carpal tunnel. Sebelum tu just nak tanya. Korang penah tak rasa kebas ke? Rasa sakit2 atau lenguh2 terutamanya pada bahagian pergelangan tangan lepas online FB 4 jam, lepas gayut telefon lama2? Kalau ada, sila beri perhatian ok ;)

Sindrom ni jadi bila saraf median dekat pergelangan tangan kita tersepit. Benda ni sebab terowong yang ada kat bahagian tapak tangan sendi pergelangan tangan kita jadi semakin sempit.


Gambar ni munkin lebih jelas kot. Korang nampak kan median nerve tu? Saraf tu la yang tersepit.


Terowong tu dia bagi laluan dan perlindungan untuk saraf median. Tekanan pada saraf median ini akan menyebabkannya sarat ni tak berfungsi dengan baik, seterusnya melemahkan bahagian tangan.

Simptom dia start slow2. Biasanya rasa sakit start kat bahagian pergelangan tangan dan boleh melarat ke bahagian tangan dan lengan. Bahaya kan?

Simptom:
  1. Kebas - pada bahagian tangan dan jari-jari tangan terutamanya ibu jari, jari telunjuk, jari hantu dan jari manis tetapi tidak pula berlaku pada jari kecil.
  2. Sakit - pada sendi pergelangan tangan sehingga ke lengan atas, bahu atau ke tapak tangan dan jari, terutamanya selepas menggunakan tangan secara berterusan atau menggunakan tangan dengan kuat.
  3. Lemah - tangan rasa lemah even boleh menyebabkan objek yang korang pegang jatuh. 
So kalau korang biasa goyang2kan tangan/pergelangan tangan lepas buat kerja, mungkin itu salah satu simptom sindrom ni.
Perngguna komputer tegar seperti blogger, geng2 IT turut dikaitkan dengan Sindrom Carpal Tunnel. Kalau korang punya pekerjaan yang banyak melibatkan penggunaan tangan atau pergelangan tangan secara berlebihan, berulang-ulang dan dengan kuat. Punca tekanan pada saraf median ini tidak dapat dipastikan dengan tepat, tetapi ia mungkin disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor seperti:

Kaedah rawatan

Bagi yang tak teruk sangat, korang boleh kurangkan rasa sakit dan kebas dengan mengambil langkah paling mudah dalam muka bumi ni iaitu rehatkan tangan tu. Ada juga kaedah rawatan lain yang melibatkan pembedahan atau tanpa bedah (non-surgical).

Maklumat ni mungkin boleh membantu terutamanya bagi golongan yang suka mengadap depan laptop/PC lama2.

Gumby-like flexible robot from Havard

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harvard scientists have built a new type of flexible robot that is limber enough to wiggle and worm through tight spaces.

It's the latest prototype in the growing field of soft-bodied robots. Researchers are increasingly drawing inspiration from nature to create machines that are more bendable and versatile than those made of metal.

The Harvard team, led by chemist George M. Whitesides, borrowed from squids, starfish and other animals without hard skeletons to fashion a small, four-legged rubber robot that calls to mind the clay animation character Gumby.

In recent years, scientists have been tinkering with squishy — sometimes odd-looking — robots designed to squeeze through hard-to-reach cracks after a disaster like an earthquake or navigate rough terrain in the battlefield.

"The unique ability for soft robots to deform allows them to go places that traditional rigid-body robots cannot," Matthew Walter, a roboticist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in an email.

A team from Tufts University earlier this year showed off a 4-inch (10-centimeter) caterpillar-shaped robot made of silicone rubber that can curl into a ball and propel itself forward.

The Harvard project, funded by the Pentagon's research arm, was described online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new robot, which took two months to construct, is 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) long. Its four legs can be separately controlled by pumping air into the limbs, either manually or via computer. This gives the robot a range of motions including crawling and slithering.

The researchers tested the robot's flexibility by having it squirm underneath a pane of glass just three-quarters of an inch from the surface.

Scientists maneuvered the robot through the tiny gap 15 times using a combination of movements. In most cases, it took less than a minute to get from side to side.

Researchers eventually want to improve the robot's speed, but were pleased that it did not break from constant inflation and deflation.

"It was tough enough to survive," said Harvard postdoctoral fellow Robert Shepherd, adding that the robot can traverse on a variety of surfaces including felt cloth, gravel, mud and even Jell-O.

There were drawbacks. The robot is tethered to an external power source and scientists need to find a way to integrate the source before it can be deployed in the real world.

"There are many challenges to actively moving soft robots and no easy solutions," Tufts neurobiologist Barry Trimmer, who worked on the caterpillar robot, said in an email.

Robotics researcher Carmel Majidi, who heads the Soft Machines Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, said the latest robot is innovative even as it builds on previous work.

"It's a simple concept, but they're getting lifelike biological motions," he said.

Gaji profesor di Indonesia lebih rendah dari guru

JAKARTA 25 Okt. - Percaya atau tidak, gaji serta elaun yang diterima oleh seorang profesor penyelidikan di Indonesia setiap bulan jauh lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan gaji yang diterima oleh seorang guru sekolah rendah di Jakarta.

Gaji pokok seorang profesor penyelidikan kategori IV (E) di Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) misalnya hanyalah sebanyak Rupiah 3.6 juta (RM1,288) dan elaun-elaun sampingan sebanyak Rupiah 1.6 juta (RM565) sebulan.

"Jumlah gaji yang saya terima sebulan ialah sebanyak Rupiah 5.2 juta (RM1,837) sebulan," kata Profesor Dr. Ir Jan Sophaeluwakan, seorang pakar geologi mendedahkan gaji yang diterimanya biarpun sudah 30 tahun berkhidmat di LIPI, lapor akhbar Kompas hari ini.

Bagaimanapun, pendapatan yang diterima seorang profesor penyelidikan yang menduduki jabatan struktur adalah sedikit tinggi kerana mereka menerima elaun jabatan sebanyak Rupiah 3.2 juta (RM1,132) setiap bulan.

"Gaji pokoknya masih sama iaitu Rupiah 3.6 juta setiap bulan dan tidak akan naik lagi kerana tangga gaji tersebut sudah sampai ke kedudukan pangkat tertinggi IV (E)," ujar Prof. Dr. Ir Bambang Subiyanto, pakar biomateria yang juga Ketua Pusat Inovasi LIPI.

Biarpun menerima elaun sampingan, namun gaji profesor penyelidikan yang juga pemegang ijazah sarjana dan doktor falsafah dari luar negara masih belum boleh menandingi pendapatan guru di sekolah rendah.

Gaji seorang guru sekolah rendah di daerah Serang, Wilayah Banten misalnya, boleh membawa pulang gaji sebesar Rupiah 6.5 juta (RM2,300).

Pendapatan sebanyak itu merupakan jumlah gaji pokok sebanyak Rupiah 2.3 juta (RM813) serta elaun sampingan sebanyak Rupiah 3.87 juta (RM1,370).

"Tidak ketinggalan pemerintah daerah Serang juga memberikan elaun sebanyak Rupiah 440,000 setiap bulan kepada kami," kata Turman, guru sekolah rendah di Serang yang sudah 29 tahun bergelar pendidik.

Pendapatan seorang guru sekolah rendah di Jakarta dilaporkan jauh lebih tinggi kerana selain menerima gaji pokok Rupiah 2.3 juta serta elaun-elaun lain juga sebanyak itu, guru-guru juga berpeluang mendapat elaun kerja daerah sebanyak Rupiah 4 juta RM1,414) daripada pemerintah Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta.

"Lumayan setiap bulan boleh memperoleh pendapatan sebanyak Rupiah 8.6 juta (RM3,040) setiap bulan," komen guru besar Sekolah Rendah Negeri Duri Pulo 1, Jakarta yang berpengalaman selama 26 tahun sebagai guru sekolah.

Menurut Bambang, kurangnya perhatian pemerintah terhadap kerjaya seorang profesor bukan hanya pada pendapatan yang rendah ditawarkan.

Sebaliknya, kemudahan untuk melakukan penyelidikan juga amat terbatas sehingga memaksa golongan cendekiawan tempatan mengadakan kerja-kerja kajian akademik secara kerjasama dengan institusi pengajian tinggi sama ada di dalam atau luar negara.

Jan pula berpendapat, ekoran tidak mendapat perhatian daripada pemerintah, ahli-ahli akademik Indonesia ada masanya melakukan kajian dan penyelidikan yang tidak relevan dengan bidang dan kepakaran mereka.

Berdasarkan laporan berkenaan, gaji yang diterima profesor penyelidikan di negara jiran Indonesia mencecah angka Rupiah 90 juta (RM31,000) sebulan sementara di Jepun dianggarkan antara Rupiah 600 juta hingga Rupiah 900 juta (RM212,000) hingga (RM318,000).

Enam IPTS ditarik balik kelulusan

KUALA LUMPUR 19 Okt . - Sebanyak enam buah institusi pengajian tinggi swasta (IPTS) telah ditarik balik kelulusan pengambilan pelajar antarabangsa bagi tempoh 10 bulan pertama tahun ini oleh Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDN) atas pelbagai kesalahan.

Menurut kenyataan yang dikeluar oleh Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi, penarikan itu dibuat berdasarkan kegagalan IPTS terbabit menguruskan pelajar antarabangsanya dengan berkesan.

"Selain itu, kementerian juga telah mengenakan syarat tambahan bagi pengambilan pelajar antarabangsa dari negara Sub Sahara dan menguatkuasakan pemakaian No Objection Certificate (NOC) kepada semua pelajar yang menggunakannya sebagai kelayakan kemasukan ke IPTS di negara ini.

"Perakuan ini diberikan melalui permohonan dalam sistem e-Student yang ditadbir urus oleh Jabatan Imigresen. Kelulusan pas pelajar dan tapisan keselamatan juga di bawah bidang kuasa imigresen berdasarkan perakuan kementerian," tambah kenyataan itu.

Menurut kenyataan itu , bagi tindakan penguatkuasaan pula, pihaknya telah membuat pemantauan ke atas pelajar antarabangsa dengan mewajibkan IPTS mengemukakan laporan berkala setiap suku tahun mengenai status pelajar dan peratus rekod kehadiran mereka ke kelas.

"Operasi bersama Jabatan Imigresen ke atas IPTS dan pelajar antarabangsa sering dilakukan dari semasa ke semasa dan sekiranya ada institusi yang melakukan kesalahan, tindakan undang-undang akan diambil.

"Sehingga bulan ini, terdapat 189 IPTS berdaftar dengan Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi dan mempunyai kelulusan KDN dalam pengambilan pelajar.

"Bagi mengekang persepsi kurang sihat terhadap pelajar antarabangsa, usaha secara lebih bersepadu melibatkan pelbagai agensi seperti Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), Jabatan Imigresen, Kementerian Sumber Manusia dan Kementerian Pelajaran akan diadakan," menurut kenyataan itu.

Selain itu, kementerian juga dalam usaha meminda akta dan peraturan berkaitan IPTS (Akta 555) serta mempertimbangkan untuk mengenakan tindakan tegas serta denda lebih tinggi terhadap IPTS yang disabitkan kesalahan.

Online poll on road safety launched

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — An online poll has been launched to gauge public opinion on whether speed limits should be cut, according to Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFORS).

A community project initiated by PLUS Expressways Berhad, it aims to establish whether speed is the primary cause of road accidents or whether it is due to other factors such as driver incompetence and carelessness.

“This initiative belongs to all Malaysians. We urge everyone to compliment the government’s efforts in promoting road safety and saving lives. Please rally behind this initiative as it is related to an issue that involves all of us without exception,” said MUFORS chairman and PLUS managing director Datuk Noorizah Abdul Hamid.

Members of the public are invited to give their views by taking part in the opinion poll at the website, www.mufors.org.my

This community project is also supported by the ministries of Works and Education, Malaysian Highway Authority, Road Safety Department, Puspakom, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the police and AMP radio network and is the fourth online poll of its kind since MUFORS was launched in August 2009.

Pertubuhan Alam Sekitar Sedunia di Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR 12 Okt. - Malaysia hari ini mengemukakan cadangan kepada Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) supaya menubuhkan Pertubuhan Alam Sekitar Sedunia (WEO) bagi menangani cabaran isu alam sekitar global yang mapan.

Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak berkata, cadangan mewujudkan badan alam sekitar itu perlu melalui proses perundingan dan pemudahcara bagi membantu negara-negara terlibat memenuhi komitmen daripada hasil perjanjian bersama tersebut.

Beliau yakin, badan seperti WEO boleh membantu penyertaan negara membangun menyelesaikan isu alam sekitar dengan lebih realistik berbanding sistem pengurusan negara sendiri menerusi ratusan perjanjian alam sekitar (MEA) yang diamalkan sejak bertahun dahulu.

''Mustahil untuk negara membangun mengambil bahagian secara sendiri. Negara yang boleh menampung sistem berkenaan hanyalah yang kaya, sementara negara yang membangun dinafikan haknya.

''Hanya melalui penambahbaikan besar sistem urus tadbir membolehkan dunia memacu usaha global menangani cabaran alam sekitar yang mapan,'' katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian dalamucapan perasmian mesyuarat persediaan pertama Kongres Sedunia: Keadilan, Urus Tadbir dan Undang-Undang Kelestarian Alam Sekitar di sini hari ini.

Teks ucapan Najib dibacakan oleh Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

Najib melihat mesyuarat persediaan hari ini penting kerana ia memberi peluang kepada peserta menyampaikan mesej untuk bergerak ke pelbagai peringkat urus tadbir alam sekitar antarabangsa dengan membawa perspektif baru untuk dibahaskan ketika Kongres Sedunia nanti.

Perdana Menteri berkata, kongres yang akan berlangsung di Brazil bermula 4 hingga 6 Jun tahun depan itu bakal memberi peluang kepada semua pihak meneliti norma dan prinsip keadilan, urus tadbir, undang-undang kemapanan alam sekitar serta yang berkaitan.

''Kongres Sedunia merupakan peluang unik untuk dilibatkan di perbahasan mengenai urus tadbir kongres Rio+20 Kemampanan dan Pembangunan dan menjadi peserta aktif terutama untuk negara membangun,'' kata beliau.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Bahagian Undang-Undang Alam Sekitar dan Konvensyen Program Alam Sekitar PBB, Bakary Kanter memuji cadangan Perdana Menteri itu yang disifatkannya sebagai langkah besar untuk membantu alam sekitar global.

''Ini pertama kali seorang pemimpin menyatakan hasrat berhubung WEA dan kesungguhan beliau menunjukkan bahawa beliau menyedari kepentingan alam sekitar di masa depan. Kami di PBB amat menghargai pandangan Perdana Menteri itu,'' katanya.

Malaysia Universities, which LEVEL are we?

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — No Malaysian university made the grade in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, which lists the world’s top 400 universities.

This is despite Universiti Malaya’s (UM) greatly improved performance in last month’s QS World University Rankings, leaping 40 places from 2010 to 167.

Malaysia’s oldest university was the only local institution to breach the QS top 200 mark after improving its academic, employment and international scores.

US, UK and European universities continued their traditional domination of the league tables in the THE rankings released yesterday.

The California Institute for Technology — or Caltech — secured top spot, followed by Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Princeton.

In the bottom half of the top 10 were Cambridge University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London, Chicago University and Berkeley.

Only 18 Asian universities made the top 200, led by the University of Tokyo (30), University of Hong Kong (34), National University of Singapore (40) and Peking University (49).

Pohang University of Science and Technology (53), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (94) and Seoul National University (124) — all from South Korea — also made the cut.

Down under, University of Melbourne (37) beat rivals Australian National University (38) and the University of Sydney (58) to be the highest ranked Australian university in the top 200.

The THE rankings, which first appeared as a supplement in The Times of London, are now published by the Times Higher Education magazine.

The weekly is regarded as the UK’s leading higher education publication.
